Debunking 5 common heat pump myths
MYTH #1: Heat pumps don’t work in winter
Yes, heat pumps work in winter and are popular even in much colder climates. Modern systems are designed to keep homes comfortable even during very cold weather. In summer, heat pumps remove heat from indoors and release it outside, cooling the interior space. This process works the same as a refrigerator—which is a heat pump!—using a refrigerant to absorb heat and move it through the system. In winter, the process reverses: the heat pump extracts heat from outside and transfers it indoors.
MYTH #2: Heat pumps are too expensive and will increase bills
While heat pumps often cost more upfront, rebates can significantly reduce installation costs. Because they are highly efficient, many homeowners also save on monthly energy bills when paired with a heat pump-friendly electric rate plan.
MYTH #3: Heat pumps require ductwork
No ductwork? No problem. In addition to ducted systems, ductless mini-split heat pumps are very common and can be installed in each room. Mini-splits allow for single-zone temperature control, saving energy by allowing you to turn on a system only in the rooms where needed.
MYTH #4: Heat pumps don't work for central heating/cooling
Already have ducts? You may not need to change them. Central heat pumps connect to existing ductwork to delier whole-home heating and cooling, replacing both a gas furnace and air conditioner with a single all-electric system.
MYTH #5: I need to upgrade my electrical panel to install a heat pump
The vast majority of homes can install a heat pump without a panel upgrade, including older homes and those that don’t currently have air conditioning. SVCE studied over 115,000 single-family homes and found that 90% could add two new heat pumps to 100-amp panels without requiring a panel or service upgrade. Learn more about best practices for avoiding panel upgrades.
